Many of us have best friends. And some of our best friends might not even be human. It could be your dog or cat that keeps you going through thick and thin. Here is a true story in which a special bond is forged between a man and a cat, starting from how they met each other
James Bowen was staying with his sister and bro-in-law. Both still have 2 kids to look after. Due to James’ inability to get along with his bro-in-law, he eventually moved out and became homeless. Staying at his friend’s house, using the sofa or floor as a bed, life was becoming increasingly unbearable. He slipped deeper into depression and started to use drugs as a getaway. He got hooked with heroin and had nothing to look forward to in his life. Eventually, he even started shoplifting as a means of getting money for heroin.
He would dress up nicely, go to a pub where he would sell the stolen goods. He would then use the money to support his drug addiction. But all this stopped when he met a ginger tom cat.
This ginger cat had no Id or collar. And had a wound on its leg. He decided to help this cat on his own. Bringing it to a nearby vet run by an animal charity, he took care of the cat for 2 weeks and gave him antibiotics to treat the wound. Meanwhile, he was still trying to locate the cat’s owner, but had so far encountered no success in the matter. Finally, he decide to release the cat where he had found him. But the cat began to follow him wherever he went. This was the moment when their journey of a special friendship began. He named the cat “Bob” after a TV character in the popular series, “Twin Peaks”.
From then on, Bob followed James to work. James even used shoelaces to create a harness for his special buddy. Both would travel by bus number 73, sitting next to the window seat, to their favourite spot at Covent Garden and Piccadilly where James worked as a street performer. Curious passer-by took a video of them and uploaded it onto YouTube. Tourists around the world would go to Covent garden just to catch a glimpse of them. But all the credit was given to Bob by James. He said, “I believe it came down to this little man. He came and asked me for help, and he needed me more than I needed to abuse my own body. He is what I wake up for every day now… he’s definitely given me the right direction to live my life”.
James wrote a book about how his beloved cat had led him away from the self-destructive path he was walking. “A Street Cat Name Bob” became a bestseller in 2010. For animal and especially cat lovers, you should read this book. How a street cat named Bob changed a man and his life.
